Your values, your goals, your desires: the hidden order that shapes your life

The world keeps asking us "what do you want?" But almost nobody asks the deeper question: "what do I really value?"
Inside every person there is a hidden order. At the top are our values, the deep truths that make us who we are. Below that are our goals, which grow naturally out of those values. And at the bottom are our desires, the little wants that come and go, like clouds passing in the sky.
Knowing this order isn't just a nice spiritual idea. It's the difference between a life that feels steady and true, and a life that feels scattered and never quite satisfied.

1. Values: The Foundation of Everything
Your values are your foundation. They aren't what you feel like today. They stay the same no matter what season of life you're in. Things like honesty, loyalty, freedom, growth, kindness, integrity.
In astrology, this is Saturn and Sun territory. Saturn is about structure, discipline, and the slow lessons life teaches us over time. The Sun is our core self, the truth we're here to express. Together, they build the architecture of who we are. They ask, what do you stand for, even when nobody's watching, even when it's hard?
When you know your values, life gets simpler. Instead of asking "what do I feel like doing?" you start asking "what fits who I really am?" That one shift changes everything.
If you've never looked closely at your Saturn or Sun and what they're asking of you, a personal reading can show you exactly where your foundation is strong and where it needs some work.
2. Goals: What Grows Naturally From Your Values
Once you know your values, your goals stop feeling like pressure. They feel like direction. A goal that comes from your values doesn't need to be forced. It grows the way a tree grows toward light it already knows is there.
If honesty is one of your values, your goal might be building relationships built on real trust. If freedom is a value, your goal might be a life that doesn't feel like a cage. Goals are just our values taking shape in the real world.
That's why goals built only on desires tend to fall apart. They have no roots. But goals built on values last, because there's something solid underneath holding them up.
3. Desires: Sweet, But Not the Foundation
Desires are the lightest layer. A desire to travel, a desire for a certain relationship, a desire for money or recognition or beauty. There's nothing wrong with desiring things. Desires add color and sweetness to life.
But here's the trap Buddhism warns us about. When we put our desires above our values, we start chasing things that were never meant to define us. Buddhism talks about this kind of craving, tanha, because desire by nature never really ends. You satisfy one desire, and another one shows up right behind it. If we build our whole life on that, we'll always feel like something's missing, because desires were never meant to be a foundation. They were only ever meant to be decoration.
This is exactly why it matters so much to remember our values. Our values are what stop us from becoming slaves to our own desires. They help us pause and ask, before chasing any desire, "does this actually fit who I am? Or is this just a craving dressed up as a need?"
When our Saturn is strong, meaning we've done the inner work of discipline and honesty with ourselves, we get the strength to say no to desires that would pull us off our path. And then the Sun can shine clearly, without being dimmed by things that were never really ours to chase.
Why This Matters So Much in Relationships
This order matters even more in love and partnership.
A lot of relationships are built on shared desires. The desire for company, for romance, for excitement, for someone who makes us feel good right now. And those things do matter. But desires alone can't hold a relationship together through hard times, because desires are the shakiest layer of who we are.
What actually holds two people together through change, distance, arguments, and time is shared values. When two people both value honesty, both value growing, both value loyalty, they can get through almost anything, because they're standing on the same ground. But when two people share desires without sharing values, the relationship often ends up fragile, built on sand instead of stone.
This is why, in a reading, I like to look closely at how your Saturn and Sun connect with a partner's chart. It shows something desires never can, whether you're building toward the same foundation, or just enjoying the same nice weather for a while. If you're curious what your chart shows about this kind of deep compatibility, this is exactly what a personal reading can reveal.
Bringing It All Together
Values are the roots. Goals are the branches that grow naturally out of those roots, reaching toward the light. Desires are the flowers, beautiful, but never meant to carry the weight of the whole tree.
When we forget this order, we end up chasing flowers while our roots dry out. We get the desire, and we still feel empty, because we built on the wrong layer.
But when we remember our values first, e
verything falls into place. Our goals feel meaningful instead of exhausting. Our desires become sweet little extras instead of desperate needs. And our relationships become safe places built on shared truth, instead of something temporary.
Saturn asks us to build slowly and honestly. The Sun asks us to shine as who we really are. Together, they remind us that the real question isn't "what do I want right now?" It's "what do I value, always?"
If you want to explore what your own Saturn and Sun are asking of you, and what your chart reveals about the values at the heart of your path, I'd love to guide you through a personal reading.

As we grow, we are conditioned to not look and give the right importance to our values. We grow learning "what's correct", "what is a good path to success", "how to behave", "choose a career with a future", "be the best". Most of us have to figure our values by ourselves. Over a long period of time. I think that just now, at least now more than ever before, there are more parents helping their kids growing to be themselves. Supporting them on their natural born values. It's a pattern not too welcome by society yet. I think you are very correct on the importance and the steps of the values, goals and desires!
